Query Processor Error after SP4
We have a database with approx. 460 tables linked to a foreign key (UserID)
in a table called Users. After installing SQL SP4, when trying to delete an
unreferenced entry in the Users table (even using Enterprise Manager), we get
the following error: "[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Internal
Query Processor Error: The query processor encountered an unexpected error
during execution."
Using the same database on a SP3a SQL server, it works fine.
Thanks in advance

Thanks for your post.
From your descriptions, I understood you SELECT statements will report the

Based on my knowledge, SQL Server SP4 should fix a related error message.

Ok, from SQL Query Analyzer the following command "DELETE FROM Users WHERE
UserID = 19" returns the following error: "Server: Msg 8630, Level 17, State
34, Line 1
Internal Query Processor Error: The query processor encountered an
unexpected error during execution."
I do not think it would be possible to simulate this problem on the
Northwind database as you need many FK links to the affected table. As you
can see, it is actually not a complex query, but SQL must determine whether
the entry being deleted is in use by one of the FK relationships (>460)
Thanks and much appreciated

Thanks for your kindly sending me the database files.
After looking into the execution plan, I believe this is a known issue of
SQL Server service pack 4.
Since we add stack overflow checks in SP4, it raise this new problem. For
now, we do not have a pretty workaround for this issue.
However, if you want to apply SP4 and this issue has big business impact to
you. I would like to recommand you opening a grace case with Microsoft

Please be advised that contacting phone support will be a charged call.

now, we do not have a pretty workaround for this issue.
However, if you want to apply SP4 and this issue has big business impact to
you. I would like to recommand you opening a grace case with Microsoft
Customer Service and Support (CSS). Please understand that we could not
share you the QFE request in the newsgroup.
Please be advised that contacting phone support will be a charged call.
However, if the support engineer confirmed this is a bug and no other
support then charges are usually refunded or waived.

Thanks. Is there a quick fix available for this problem? We've advised all
our customers to go to SP4 (when it was released) and they wont be happy if
we tell them to go back to SP3a (as they all have this problem). Can you also
supply us with the KB number for this problem. Would it be possible for you
to send the QFE via e-mail to me?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your update.
Unfortunately, I am so sorry to say that there is temporarily no public
Knowledge Base articles and document describing this issue. This issue only
occurs in SQL Server 2000 SP4, SQL Server 2000 SP3 and SQL Server 2005 do
not have this issue.
Unfortunately, I am unable to process the delivery of QFEs via email
directly. However, you should be able to quickly get this QFE by opening
the grace case with CSS.

Thanks for your cooperation.
I just wanted to follow up to let you know that the Support Engineer that
you are working with in CSS has contacted me directly to let me know that
the hotfix I recommended is not currently available to the public. I
apologize that I was not previously aware of this situation.
Please continue to work with the CSS Support Engineer for a workaround or

Query parallelism/ACCESS and DUAL PROCESSORS?
The SQL server is also used by an ACCESS front end for another application.
The ACCESS queries started getting this error:
Server: Msg 8650, Level 13, State 127, Line 1
Intra-query parallelism caused your server command (process ID #79) to deadlock. Rerun the query without intra-query parallelism by using the query hint option (maxdop 1).
The ACCESS developer found some KB articles indicating that turning off the DUAL PROCESSOR would fix the problem.
We have concerns about how the rest of the server usage will react to turning off the DUAL PROCESSOR option.
Anyone have experience with this type of problem?
Usually the work-around states that you can disable the use of multiple
processors at the server level OR you can disable parallelism for the
specific query causing the problem. Assuming that you can identify the
specific queries and can modify them, then it is far better to change the
queries. Otherwise you lose the benefit of multiple processors which can be
very significant!

Query parallelism/ACCESS and DUAL PROCESSORS?
rograms. Most operations to the database occur within stored procedures.

Query over name/value table
In my program users should be able to manage their documents. To allow users
to search for documents they can use predefined attributes like Title or
Description or they can assign their own custom attributes. I'm using the
following tables for this.
Document (Stores the predefined document attributes)
- Id
- Title
- Description
- ...
Attributes (Stores the custom attributes)
- Id
- Name
AttributeValues (Stores the custom attribute values assigned to a document)
- DocumentId
- AttributeId
- Value
Users should be able to do complex queries to find documents (and/or/not,
nested parenthesises). They should not only be able to query for the
predefined attributes, but also for the custom attributes. I also want to
have all attributes (predefined or custom) present for each document that
matches the query conditions to load them into a document-object in my
application.
What is the best way to do such queries in SQL? The problem that I have is
with the custom attributes. When I want to query for the predefined
attributes, I could just do a:
SELECT * FROM Document, AttributeValues WHERE Document.Title like '%bla%'
AND AttributeValues.DocumentId = Document.Id ORDER BY Document.ID
The result would give me all attribnutes of every document that contains
"bla" in the title, with the custom attributes in seperate rows.
However I can't come up with a good query that would return a similar result
set for searching custom attributes.
Can you help me?
Thanks a lot!
Thomas Krause
P.S. The user should be able to query an infinite number of custom or
predefined attributes at the same time and combine them with nested
ANDs/ORs/etc!Ok. Thank you very much.
What's about the performance? Is there a better/faster way than having this
subqueries.
We are not talking about a very big dataset here, but if there is a
noticible faster way for doing this I would prefer it anyway.
For example: I think you could do the same with multiple joins of the
AttributeValues-table. Would this be faster?
Thanks,
Thomas Krause

aproach to see which is faster. I would expect the exists and the inner
join to perform pretty much the same, while the outer join would likely be
slower. In any case, proper indexes are critical (probably one on either
(AttributeId, Value) or (DocumentId, AttributeId, Value). The indexes may
determine whther SQL Server treats the exists and inner join differently or
not.
If the attribute has to be found, use an inner join:
SELECT * FROM Document
WHERE Document.Title like '%bla%'
inner join AttributeValues
on Document.Id = AttributeValues.DocumentId
and AttributeValues.AttributeId = '@.AttributeID'
and AttributeValues.Value like '%blablabla%'
ORDER BY Document.ID
If the attribute is optional, use an outer join:
SELECT * FROM Document
WHERE Document.Title like '%bla%'
left outer join AttributeValues
on Document.Id = AttributeValues.DocumentId
and AttributeValues.AttributeId = '@.AttributeID'
and AttributeValues.Value like '%blablabla%'
ORDER BY Document.ID

If the performance is not that different, I'll go with the subqueries, since
they are a little bit easier to generate dynamically.

Query Load Balancing
Hi,
We have a massive database that users run complex queries on. The queries are never the same so caching cannot be used too much effect. When many queries are run at one time by the various users the system slows down.
What we are trying to achieve is maybe have a primary SQL Server 2005 machine and multiple (4-5) SQL Server 2005 secondary machines. The primary machine would get the query and would decide based on loads as to which secondary machine would fulfill the query.
We are not worried about failover and clustering and all that fun stuff. Our primary concern is to achieve the quickest execution of the query. We were wondering if SQL Server 2005 has any feature that enables query load balancing of some kind.
Thanks
Sounds to me that you should seriously investigate replication.
Now your comment "The primary machine would get the query and would decide based on loads as to which secondary machine would fulfill the query." is not addressed by SQL Server out of the box, but you could maybe design some custom code.
My main point here is that I would NOT recommend looking at database mirroring for your solution. Mirroring is primarily a failover/hot standby solution for availability.
Thanks,
Mark
